After the last four years, when access to Petra tou Romiou was closed from the usual route due to landslides, today the section of the road was given back to traffic, with a handover ceremony in the presence of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works. At the same time, Yiannis Karousos announced that within the next few months the second phase of improvement of this road network will begin.
This section of the road to Petra tou Romiou, from the Pissouri area to the Ha-Potami area, remained out of circulation for the last four years due to the significant difficulties that existed, the competent minister stressed. That is why, he pointed out, there was also a very large increase in costs, since out of the initial €700,000 that had been estimated, the project eventually cost €1.4 million.
The second phase of the restoration works, Mr. Karousos said, will be done on the basis of the documents for the tenders already prepared by the Department of Public Works and the estimated cost of expenditure amounts to €4 million.
The works completed in the first phase concerned the stabilization of the specific section of the Paphos-Limassol road with the creation of stabilization works, new road construction and works for the rehabilitation of the subsoil.
Finally, Yannis Karousos stressed that with the improvement works carried out in the area, viewing points of the World Heritage Site have been created for visitors.
