BERLIN AIRPORT - 24 HOUR STRIKE 25 JANUARY

 Filenews 23 January 2023

German union Verdi announced a 24-hour strike at Berlin-Brandenburg airport (BER) for Wednesday.

No passenger flights will land or take off from the airport on that day.

Ground handling services, the airport management company as well as aviation security will be affected, the union announced today.

"In this situation, the management company must conclude that no scheduled passenger flights can be carried out at the BER on this day and, with this in mind, has also informed all partners at the airport of the announced strike," the airport's management company said.

About 300 departures and arrivals were planned with about 35,000 passengers.

Verdi requires a monthly salary increase of €500 for the company's ground staff and employees, with the collective agreement valid for 12 months.

The German union said the employers' side is demanding longer contract periods for both ground handling services and the airport management company.

In addition to administration, the company also employs firefighters, airport security, and traffic management.

According to Verdi, 6,000 workers are affected by the ongoing negotiations.

According to the union, negotiations on aviation safety workers are being conducted at the national level, but in seven rounds of negotiations there has been "almost no progress".

"There is still no indication from employers that they want a solution to be found," the union said.

The same says the negotiations concern "an increase in overtime pay for night shifts, for Sundays, holidays and Saturdays as well as for a better collective agreement for the payment of overtime".
