PAPHOS-LIMASSOL MOTORWAY CLOSED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS FOR 2 HOURS THIS MORNING

Filenews 31 January 2023 - by Dora Christodoulou

The concrete and quarrying companies today proceeded with the dynamic protest against the lack of quarrying materials in the existing quarrying zones of Paphos. Dozens of concrete mixers cut off traffic on both streams of the Paphos-Limassol motorway for two hours, as a sign of protest against the delay of those responsible in defining new quarrying zones in the district of Paphos.

The event started at 7.00am and the Police, who had a strong presence in the area, took emergency measures to channel traffic in both directions through the exits of the motorway at the height of Agia Varvara and the side streets of the area. At the point, queues of cars were formed heading to Paphos or Limassol, but the point chosen by the organizers of the event for its realization, allowed the relatively uninterrupted service of the moving drivers.

The event had been postponed last Tuesday, after arranging a meeting with Environment Minister Costas Kadis to discuss the problem of the lack of materials for the manufacture of concrete in the saturated quarrying zones and their request for the establishment of new zones. However, judging that the delays in finding a solution continue, concrete and quarrying companies today proceeded to the dynamic demonstration for their problem.

Concrete manufacturers and companies operating in the quarries are complaining of a long delay in defining new zones, while, they point out, stocks in the existing ones have been virtually exhausted. Speaking to "F", Olga Athinodorou said that in essence the sector is now struggling to meet the increased development and building needs of Cyprus and stressed that for two years now they have been waiting for the state for the official decision to establish new zones of their activity.
