CHLORAKAS - IMPORTANT EVIDENCE FOR PERIODS IN CYPRUS BROUGHT TO LIGHT

 Filenews 4 January 2023

Important data on the Middle and Late Chalcolithic period in Cyprus from 3500 BC to 2,500 BC have brought to light the results of the 2022 excavation at the site of Chlorakas - Palloures, which was completed, according to the Department of Antiquities.

As stated in an announcement of the Department, which is transmitted by the PIO, the excavations are being conducted under the direction of Professor Dr. Bleda Düring from the University of Leiden.

In particular, the excavations brought to light a building in an excellent state of preservation, the walls of which are preserved up to a metre high, a finding extremely rare for Prehistoric Cyprus.

This building was destroyed by a fierce fire as indicated by the thick layer of ash and the number of whole vessels, sanders and mortars revealed on its floor. The conservation status of the building and the deposits on the floor are important documents that will contribute not only to the reconstruction of the buildings where man lived 5000 years ago but also to the disclosure of the activities that took place inside them.

It is added that in parallel with the excavation activity, Leiden's team was engaged in the preservation of the archaeological material and especially the welding of the large number of crushed vessels, which had been found the previous year in another building that had also been destroyed by fire.

The preservation of vases provides information concerning - in addition to their shape, type and size - the type of liquid or solid food, which may have been stored in them.

With great dedication, Leiden's team managed to weld the crushed vessels, which were transferred at the end of the excavation period to the Archaeological Museum of the Pafos District for safekeeping and storage, the announcement concludes.
