An immediate prison sentence of 22 months was imposed today by the Limassol District Court on the 35-year-old Russian driver, who caused the death of the 62-year-old Hungarian woman, mother of two children, victim of the fatal one, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday (7/12) on the coastal road of Georgiou Vasileos in Germasogeia.
Specifically, the judge imposed on the 35-year-old defendant an immediate sentence of 22 months in prison for the offence of causing death by negligence. It also imposed a penalty of deprivation of a driver's license for a period of 3 months and ten penalty points. For the offense of violating red traffic lights, a fine of €1,000 was imposed, while for the offense of driving under the influence of alcohol €500 as well as a fine of €500 in the speed category.
It is recalled that the 35-year-old in previous court proceedings had admitted the four charges he faced while remaining indicted in the Central Prisons until the sentencing. The defendant was represented by the lawyers, Antonis Antoniou and Maria Neophytou.
The fatality occurred around one in the morning (7/12) when the 35-year-old's vehicle with the 27-year-old as co-driver was heading east on Georgiou Vasileos Street. At the junction of Panagiotis Tsangaris Street, the 35-year-old did not stop at the red light and as a result he collided violently with the vehicle of the 62-year-old who was trying to enter the coastal road heading west. Unfortunately, the 62-year-old died instantly. Determinants of the fatal, increased speed in combination with alcohol consumption and violation of a red light.
