The Polish Interior Ministry has reported that a gift delivered by the Ukrainian security services during the recent visit of the Polish official to the Ukrainian territory exploded in the premises of the commander-in-chief of the National Police, Jaroslaw Szymczyk.

The explosion occurred at about 7.50 a.m. (local time) on Wednesday and caused minor injuries to the police commander himself, who is still in hospital, the Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement.

The authorities also reported that a civilian employee of the National Police Headquarters was also injured, although in his case he did not require hospitalization.

Later, a spokesman for the Prosecutor's Office admitted to the Polish news agency PAP that a third person was also injured, although "the health of many people or property" was affected by the explosion.

"Due to the specificity, location and nature of the event, it is not possible to provide information on the findings made at this stage," the aforementioned spokesman added.

According to the Interior Ministry, Szymczyk had traveled last weekend to Ukraine, where he met with the heads of the Ukrainian Police and the Emergency Situations Service.

Within the framework of this working meeting, the Polish official received a gift from the Ukrainian security representatives. The Polish authorities have demanded "appropriate explanations" from Ukraine.
