In order to ensure the safety of the electricity production system, the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO) is preparing the program of power cuts in cooperation with the Distribution System Operator, with the planning so far to provide for power outages every half hour in the areas of Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta Districts.
The cuts became necessary as the six steam power units of the Dhekelia Power Station are removed from the system from tomorrow following the relevant decisions of the EAC guilds.
In a statement, TSOC spokesman Vrachimis Koutsoloukas said that the plan for cuts is currently being drawn up and added that as soon as it is finalized, more details will be announced.
Based on the data so far, the cuts will be made every half hour or every hour, Mr. Koutsoloukas said, adding that this issue will also be finalized in the final plan.
He noted that the TSO calculates how many megawatts (MW) will be cut depending on demand, while the Distribution System Operator gives the groups from which the cuts will be made. He noted that training is done in order not to affect critical infrastructure.
Yesterday, the TSO announced that when total demand reaches 600MW or more, there will be a need to cut the consumer load in the districts of Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta, while given that the amount of reserves will be reduced, a possible failure in a power plant will lead to further cuts in consumer load on a nationwide basis.
According to the data of the DSKM yesterday, the total demand had peaked around 19:15 at 660 MW, while in the TSO the estimates for the next few days based on weather conditions refer to a maximum demand of around 700 MW.
