POLICE BEGIN CRACKDOWN ON DRUNK AND HIGH DRIVERS

Filenews 4 December 2022 - by Staff Reporter

Police will go tough with its crackdown on drunk drivers starting Monday, as well as those driving under the influence of drugs.

According to an announcement, starting Monday through to Sunday, officers will be carrying out round the clock checks across the country. There will be greater focus on Friday and Saturday nights.

Between 2019 – 2021, across the EU, 18 per cent of road deaths were due to drunk drivers and 33.6 per cent due to driving under the influence of drugs, police said.

Taking drugs reduces drivers performance and impacts their reflexes, the announcement added.

Officers will also be on the lookout for other offences such as speeding, driving while using a mobile phone and whether a seatbelt or helmet are being used.
