The first green hydrogen power station and filling station in Cyprus has been approved for funding from the European Commission's Innovation Fund. This is the first time that a Cypriot project has managed to obtain this approval, says the company MCK Future Fuels Ltd of the Ketonis Holdings group, which is among the entities that collaborated on the project.
In an announcement, the company says that the project, named GreenH2CY, is considered groundbreaking, not only in Cyprus but throughout Europe, as it contributes to the greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets and at the same time promotes decarbonization in the transport sector.
The project provides for the installation and operation of a PEM electrolyte. The hydrogen plant is expected to produce 150 tonnes of hydrogen fuel per year. This is equivalent to 627 tons of diesel fuel per year. The energy will be provided by a local renewable energy supplier using guarantees of origin (GOs) to prove the use of only renewable energy sources, so that the final product can be classified as green.
According to the announcement, the water to be used will come from tertiary wastewater treatment by the Larnaca Water Development Department, thus contributing to circular economy actions. For the first step, the final product will be used in the transport sector, and more specifically for light and heavy-duty vehicles, to replace diesel vehicles.
MCK Future Fuels Ltd and Ketonis Holdings, in their announcement, thank all those who contributed to the approval of the project and in particular the Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works and the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, as well as the energy and environment consultants of ideopsis ltd, who contributed to the writing of the proposal.
