The "Zeus-1" drilling works within Block 6 of the EEZ of the Republic of Cyprus were successfully completed.
Specifically, the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry announces that the works of the exploratory drilling "Zeus-1", within Block 6 of the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus, have been successfully and safely completed by the joint venture of Eni Cyprus Limited (Operator) and TotalEnergies EP Cyprus B.V.
The drilling, which was carried out by the drilling ship "Tungsten Explorer" at a distance of 162 kilometers from the coast of Cyprus, 5 kilometres west of the "Cronos-1" drilling and at a water depth of 2,300 metres, demonstrated the existence of a 105-metre column of pure natural gas, with quantities that, according to preliminary estimates, amount to a total of 2 to 3 trillion cubic feet (Tcf).
The discovery of "Zeus-1", the third in a row by the licensed consortium in Block 6, after "Calypso-1" and "Cronos-1", has also been successfully tested in terms of its qualitative technical characteristics and reaffirms the promising prospects of the area. Already, the Ministry of Energy and a consortium are examining ways to accelerate and make the best use of the discoveries in Block 6 of the EEZ of Cyprus, with the results of the new drilling being incorporated, by Eni and TotalEnergies, in the studies they are conducting for this very purpose.
The companies' announcement
TotalEnergies and Eni made a new natural gas discovery at the Zeus-1 well, block 6, offshore Cyprus. This discovery follows the discoveries Calypso-1 and Cronos-1 made in the same square respectively in 2018 and August 2022. The Zeus-1 well faced 105 metres of net gas pay in carbonate tanks that enhance the promising outlook for the region and its development.
The Zeus-1 is located 162 km off the coast of Cyprus and 5 km west of Cronos-1, has been safely drilled and successfully tested by the Tungsten Explorer drilling rig.
"This success in Zeus-1 further enhances the capabilities of Block 6, just four months after the discovery of Cronos-1," said Kevin McLachlan, Senior Vice President, Exploration at TotalEnergies. "The new data collected from the well will help to continuously evaluate the rapid deployment options for the discovered resources."
