Filenews 24 November 2022
In the context of the seismicity of our area, the new seismic vibration at 2:34 in the morning in the district of Paphos is included, said the Director of the Geological Survey Department Christodoulos Hadjigeorgiou.
In his statements, Mr. Hadjigeorgiou said that aftershock activity has been recorded and specifically six aftershocks, with the largest recorded at 2.9 degrees on the Richter scale. He also pointed out that aftershock activity is being monitored.
The earthquake, he said, occurred in the area between the fault zone from the Argakas area in Kanaviou and the Finiou fault. He added, however, that in the wider region the largest earthquake they had historically was that of 1953 with a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale in Stroumpi, which was destructive.
He also said that in the wider area, 30 earthquakes over 4.0 on the Richter scale and 5 seismic tremors over 5.0 on the Richter scale have been recorded in the past.
Mr. Hadjigeorgiou also mentioned that at that time there were no instrumental recordings, so errors may have occurred in relation to the epicentres and magnitudes of these earthquakes.
The new seismic vibration, he continued, is part of the seismicity of our region, adding that earthquakes are recorded daily by the seismological network, but, as he said, there are those that are sensitive but not destructive.
According to Mr. Hadjigeorgiou, the seismic tremor was recorded at 2.34 in the morning and its epicentre was 30 km northeast of the city of Paphos (wider area of Agios Ioannis in Paphos) with a focal depth of 12 km. The earthquake was felt throughout Cyprus and was particularly felt in the districts of Paphos and Limassol.
He also noted that the phenomenon is monitored by the Seismological Center of the Geological Survey Department.
