LARNACA AIRPORT - SPONTANEOUS STOPPAGE FOR TWO HOURS [updated]

Filenews 1 November 2022 - by Natasha Christoforou

In a spontaneous work stoppage, the employees of the ground handling companies at Larnaka airport descended from ten o'clock.

The two-hour work stoppage was prompted by the layoffs of dozens of workers from the companies. Specifically, according to the guilds, LGS and Swissport delivered redundancy letters to 156 workers, 111 from LGS and 45 from Swissport.

This provoked the ire of the guilds, since they consider that the public assurances given by the Minister of Transport, Giannis Karousos, that the inclusion of new companies in the field of ground handling will not threaten existing jobs have not been respected.

UPDATE

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, regarding the issue of thetwo-hour work stoppage of ground handling personnel at Larnaka airport, which took place today, November 1, 2022, reiterates that, according to the Ministerial Decree no. K.D.P. 550/2021 and the Regulations governing the licensing and operation of airport ground handling companies, these companies must respect, adopt and abide by collective agreements, including the previous agreements between the Government and the Trade Unions, regarding the terms and conditions of employment and the remuneration of employees, including employees who were previously under the employment of the state and were transferred to any of these companies. At the same time, we remind you that, in the relevant Regulations accompanying the Decree, it is stated that priority for employment is given to any excess staff from existing companies due to a decrease in their turnover.

At the same time, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works considers that today's work stoppage does not serve anything and did not need to be done, especially in view of tomorrow's meeting of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works and the competent Services of the Ministry of Labor and Social Insurance with all those involved, which was scheduled yesterday.
