TREMITHOUSA - 'SEWAGE OVERFLOW CONCERN FOR PUBLIC HEALTH'

Cyprus Mail 6 October 2022 - by Antigoni Pitta

Sewage systems at an apartment complex in Tremithousa are overflowing, posing a serious risk to public health, community leader Christofis Petrou said on Thursday.

Located between the communities of Tremithousa and Emba, the building in question is home to a large number of asylum seekers.

According to Petrou, during an inspection carried out with state officials, it was discovered that sewage from the building was leaking into an adjacent pond.

Despite this, “no substantial measure has been taken yet,” he said.

The community of Tremithousa, in whose boundaries the complex is located, is not within the boundaries of the Paphos sewerage board.

Petrou called on the relevant services to intervene immediately, saying that “there is a risk of groundwater contamination but also a general risk to public health if this situation continues”.

He added that he has also written some letters to the interior ministry and the Paphos district administration to complain about the issues caused by the presence of asylum seekers in the community.
