The arrest of a 33-year-old man, suspected of investigating cases of house burglary and theft, led to a traffic check by members of the Police, in the morning today, on the Limassol-Nicosia highway. The 33-year-old, with his student driver's license expired and not covered by an insurance certificate, was driving a car that is declared immobilized, without a registration plate in the front, and with an expired certificate of suitability – MOT, while he tested positive for driving under the influence of drugs.
Specifically, at around 8.20 in the morning of Saturday, members of the Road Accident Prevention Unit – OPOD, the Traffic Police Headquarters, who were conducting a traffic control on the Limassol-Nicosia highway, in the section near Mari, stopped the 33-year-old driver, whose car did not have a registration plate in the front, for inspection. From the inspection that followed, it was found that his car was declared to the Department of Road Transport – TFT, as immobilized, while the certificate of suitability of the vehicle expired in January, 2022. At the same time, it was found that, the 33-year-old was driving the car without himself being covered by an insurance certificate and while his student driver's license expired in March, 2022.
After the 33-year-old showed symptoms of drug use, OPOD members also proceeded to a drug test with the indication of the preliminary drug test being positive. Samples were taken from the 33-year-old for a final laboratory drug test.
During the traffic control, the members of the Traffic Police found that, against the 33-year-old driver, a judicial arrest warrant had been issued, in relation to investigated cases of house burglary and theft. This is a case of burglary of an apartment in an apartment building in the district of Larnaca, from where a television was stolen, worth €250, as well as a case of theft of a number of boilers and copper tubes, with a total value of €1,750, stolen from the same apartment building. The burglary and theft were committed in March, 2022.
Following evidence that has recently emerged as part of the investigation of the two burglary and theft cases, a judicial arrest warrant was issued against the 33-year-old suspect on October 14. He was arrested by the members of the Traffic Police Headquarters who stopped him for inspection and was taken into custody for the purpose of investigating the two cases.
The two cases are being investigated by the Kition Police Station. At the same time, the case of traffic violations allegedly committed by the 33-year-old is being investigated by the Zygi Police Station.
