Information and policing week with roadside checks of trucks and buses, is held from Monday to Sunday, October 10-16, by the Police, as part of the actions to reduce road collisions and increase safety on the road network. The week of actions will be held at a Pan-European level, by the member countries of the European Traffic Police Network Roadpol, with the Cyprus Police being actively involved in the whole effort, as a member of the European Police Network.
At the heart of Roadpol's specifically dedicated weekly action will be information on the risks caused by non-compliance with current legislation, as well as the intensification of traffic checks on violations committed by truck and bus drivers. Particular emphasis will be placed on policing in black and dangerous parts of the road network, where the chances of causing road collisions are particularly high.
The technical and mechanical suitability of lorries and buses, the validity of drivers' and vehicle documents, speed limitation devices and tachographs, and the observance of driving and working hours by professional drivers, will be reference points for traffic checks, as will offences which are proven to be the main factors causing serious and fatal road collisions; such as speed limit violations and the use of a mobile phone while driving.
In the context of the daily traffic checks by the Police, traffic violations committed by professional drivers of vehicles, such as taxi, truck, and bus drivers, have been identified and reported recently. On the occasion of the European Week of Actions and the violations and complaints that have been recorded, the Police address recommendations to professional drivers for compliance with the legislation and compliance with the road traffic code and road safety rules, always with the aim of preventing serious and fatal road traffic collisions.
Driving heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses, as well as driving TAXI vehicles carrying a number of passengers, presents increased difficulties and risks on the road network. Risks arising due to the size and weight of buses and trucks, as well as due to the transport of other persons, but also cargo. This requires special attention and concentration on the part of professional drivers, especially when transporting other passengers and cargo.
The Police are intensifying traffic checks on the road network to deal with traffic violations, while once again calling on professional drivers to comply with traffic legislation and regulations.
