PEYIA TO PAPHOS AIRPORT ROAD IMPROVEMENT - LIKELY TOTAL COST AROUND €42 million

Filenews 20 October 2022 - by Vassos Vassiliou

Approximately €5 million will be the cost of the 8 km Chlorakas-Lembas and Kissonerga-Coral Bay roads, which includes an additional secondary road network of 6 km in length.

The cost arises from a reply by the Minister of Transport, Yiannis Karousos, to a question by AKEL's Paphos MP, Valentinos Fakontis.

The Minister, commenting on a question regarding the promotion of the road from Paphos airport to Peyia and specifically the Chlorakas-Pegeia section (coastal road), records the following:

-The project for the improvement of the coastal front of Chlorakas-Lembas and Kissonerga-Coral Bay, as an extension of the Avenue Tombs of the Kings, is an urban project of four lanes (two per direction) with a length of 8 kilometres. The master plan was prepared by the Department of Town Planning and Housing and includes a built-in central islet, bicycle paths, paved sidewalks, lanes and green spaces, roadside parking lots, seven level roundabouts and eight photo-controlled intersections. The project also includes the study of the construction of a secondary road network of about 6 km.

-The Master Plan was updated by the Department of Town Planning and Housing, sent by the Technical Committee of the Central Traffic Problem Resolution Body (TEKFEKP) on July 13, 2021. A relevant order was sent by the Department of Town Planning and Housing on September 13, 2021, for the further planning of the project but the dispatch of the final Master Plan (with the comments adopted by tekfekp) and the Environmental approval, which are an integral part of the tender documents for the contractor private designer, are still pending.

According to the minister, the aim of the Department of Public Works is to announce tenders (for the preparation of the study by a private designer) within the first quarter of 2023. The duration of the study is estimated at around two years. The Minister informs Mr. Fakontis that the issue of the division of the project into phases will be examined in the context of the preparation of the tender documents of the study in cooperation with the Department of Town Planning and Housing. Project notes (PCNs) have also been prepared and approved. The cost of the project is expected to exceed €35 million +VAT."

Based on the above, the total cost is expected to be around €41.65 million.
