MED5 - MINISTERIAL MEETING BEGINS IN PAPHOS ON MIGRATION

With the aim of promoting a new European Pact on Asylum and Migration, MED 5, the competent Ministers of the five frontline Mediterranean countries - Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain and Malta - are meeting today and tomorrow in Paphos. The aim is to continue constructive cooperation to achieve common goals and a mutual strategy in the area of asylum and migration.

The work of the MED5 Ministerial Meeting hosted by the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Cyprus at the ANASSA Hotel in Chrysochous Bay begins today Friday with the participation of the Ministers of Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain and Malta. According to a relevant announcement, the Minister of the Interior of the presiding country of the Council of the European Union, the Czech Republic, Vít Rakušan, will also attend the work of the Summit. The opening of the Summit will be welcomed by the Commissioner for Home Affairs of the European Commission, Ylva Johansson, with an online speech.

On the agenda will be the evaluation of the mechanism already proposed by the European Commission and put in place for voluntary solidarity in frontline Member States for the relocation of a number of migrants to other Member States. The external dimension of migration is also expected to be discussed with Ministers, with emphasis on the development of cooperation with third countries and ways to promote such return agreements.

At the end of the meeting, a joint statement by ministers is expected, in view of the upcoming Home Affairs Council of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU in Luxembourg and the presentation of a joint press conference tomorrow, Saturday, 8 October at 12.45 p.m.
