High concentrations of dust are observed today, October 26, 2022, in the atmosphere according to the measurements of the ground Stations of the Air Quality Monitoring Network of the Department of Labor Inspection.
Because the dust contains small inhalable particles that are likely to have a negative effect on human health, the public and especially vulnerable population groups (children, the elderly and the sick) are advised to avoid circulating in open spaces until the phenomenon is over.
Employers must take appropriate organizational and/or technical measures, after assessing the risks to their employees who are in open spaces and employees in such areas are advised to use appropriate means of personal protection.
For information, the hourly dust concentration values measured at 10:00 a.m. in the following areas were:
Nicosia: 132,4 μg/m3
Limassol: 104,2 μg/m3
Larnaca: 78,8 μg/m3
Paralimni: 41,6 μg/m3
Paphos: 116,9 μg/m3
Zygi: - μg/m3
Agia Marina Xyliatou: 39,6 μg/m3
It is noted that "dust" means inhalable suspended particles in the atmosphere with a diameter of less than 10 μm (PM10). According to the relevant legislation, the limit value refers to the daily average value and must not exceed the value of 50 μg/m3 (micrograms per cubic meter).
More information and continuous, immediate information on the results of the hourly measurements can be found on www.airquality.gov.cy website and in the "Air Quality Cyprus" application, which can be installed free of charge on a mobile phone.
Meanwhile autumn will be the backdrop of the weather these days, with sunshine giving way to rains and thunderstorms.
The weather report in detail:
Weak low pressure is expected to temporarily affect the area through Wednesday night. Dust will be observed in the atmosphere intermittently, whose concentrations on Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be elevated.
Today, initially there will be temporarily increased, mainly average clouds, which may give isolated rains. Gradually, however, clouds will develop with the weather becoming locally mostly cloudy, while local rains or thunderstorms are expected to fall, mainly in the mountains, in some areas of the interior, on the south and east coasts.
In a thunderstorm, winds can strengthen and change. By late afternoon the weather is expected to improve.
The winds will blow mainly northeast to southeast and locally variable weak to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will be initially calm until a little turbulent and gradually on the east and south coasts a little turbulent.
The temperature will rise to around 28 degrees inland, on the south and east coasts, around 26 on the west coast, around 27 on the north coast and around 18 degrees on the higher mountains.
Tonight, the weather will gradually become mostly clear. The winds will blow mainly northwest to northeast and on the north coast to southeast weak, 3 Beaufort. The sea will become calm until a little turbulent but locally on the east coast it will be a little turbulent. The temperature will drop to around 15 degrees inland, around 18 degrees on the coast and around 11 degrees in the higher mountains.
On Thursday, clouds that will develop from noon onwards may give isolated rains, mainly in western and southern mountainous areas. The temperature is not expected to change significantly.
On Friday, the weather will be mostly clear but increased clouds in the afternoon are not excluded to give isolated light rain in the mountains. The temperature is expected to gradually drop slightly.
On Saturday, the weather will be mostly clear. The temperature is expected to gradually drop slightly.
