GREEN LIGHT FOR THE CREATION OF A NATIONAL COMMISSION ON AUTISM

 Filenews 19 October 2022

The creation of a National Committee on Autism was decided at yesterday's meeting of the Council of Ministers, following a proposal presented by the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare. Anastasia Anthousi. The terms of reference of this Committee include the study of the current situation, the recording of gaps and shortcomings, the submission of a single proposal for a National Strategy on Autism and the preparation of a Strategic Plan with a plan for the implementation of specific actions.

The increase in the percentage of people diagnosed with autism in Cyprus and worldwide requires measures to ensure the provision of high quality services and support to people on the autism spectrum, based on modern international best practices. The aim is for people with autism, both in childhood and adolescence and in adulthood, to have at their disposal all the tools for a healthy and productive life in the community and to enjoy a decent standard of living with maximum autonomy.

The aim of the National Strategy is to develop a national strategic plan for Autism Spectrum Disorder, focusing on eight pillars with specific actions per pillar and aiming to meet the full range of needs of people with autism, including early diagnosis and the provision of appropriate support for full social participation.

The National Commission on Autism will represent the Ministries of Labour, Health, Education, Transport, Finance and the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare. At the same time, it was decided to establish an interministerial Committee chaired by the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, which will monitor the progress of the implementation of the National Strategy and will provide the required political guidance, where necessary.
