Cyprus' criminal justice ranks 18th in the world, the Supreme Court says.
As he notes, the annual results for 2022 of a global survey of the International Organization World Justice Project, which is an Independent International Organization, were announced yesterday, with the aim of promoting the principles of the rule of law around the world and is described as the largest global interdisciplinary platform.
In the results that cover exclusively issues related to the rule of law (lack of corruption and discrimination, absence of government interventions, proper and fair administration of justice and others) 140 countries were evaluated, including Cyprus, which was ranked, based on all criteria, in 28th place, as in 2021.
A particular success, it is added, can be characterized by the ranking of criminal justice of Cyprus from 20th place in 2021, to 18th place in 2022. In terms of civil justice (lawsuits), Cyprus was ranked 38th compared to 36th place in 2021.
The effect on this result of delays in the administration of civil justice is obvious, since, based on the relevant criterion, Cyprus ranks very low in the table, while the other indicators are at a satisfactory level. The problem arises through long delays.
The announcement states that this shows once again the need for reforms and changes promoted by the Supreme Court in cooperation with the executive, the House of Representatives and the Cyprus Bar Association, in order to address the large volume of old cases that have accumulated and the great problem of delays.
Regarding the absence of corruption, the investigation "scores" the executive with 0.65 points (with a higher score of 1), the judiciary with 0.90, the Police/Army with 0.75 and the legislative power with 0.41, the statement concludes.
