Alexander Lukashenka said Belarus and Russia would deploy a joint military strike force on the country's western border in response to what he called a worsening tension. The news was reported by the state news agency Belta.
"Due to the deterioration of the situation on the western border of the (Russian-Belarusian) Union, we agreed to deploy a regional force of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus," Lukashenka said during a meeting with officials of the Belarusian security forces, according to the state-run Belarusian news agency Belta.
Reuters reports that the agency cites Lukashenka saying the two countries would deploy a regional military team and had begun to gather forces two days ago, apparently after the explosion on Russia's bridge in Crimea.
According to the Guardian, this is an important development on the war front as it may mean that Belarus is going to participate directly in the war. But it may also mean that we will see Russia placing many more troops on the territory of Belarus or installing a more permanent presence.
Putin earlier pledged to send to Belarus the Iskander-M missile systems that will have a range of 500 miles, putting more European cities in the range of a possible strike.
Dangerous escalation
Moscow admitted that behind the explosion is Ukraine, and already at dawn began attacks on Kiev and several cities. This is Russia's first strike in Kiev in months.
