SIGNATURE FOR €88 million PROJECT FOR MOTORWAY TODAY

The signatures for the contract for the construction of the Astromeritis - Evrychou Motorway costing €88,627,630 were dropped today at the Presidential Palace.

During the ceremony, the Minister of Transport, Yiannis Karousou, said that, "This is a long-awaited project, which the local authorities and the society of the mountainous Nicosia have been waiting for decades, a project that will improve the connectivity and accessibility of the mountainous areas with the urban centre, will enhance road safety, will significantly reduce the journey time and will contribute greatly to the implementation of the national strategy for mountainous areas. "

Details about the project

The project concerns an 11 km long four-lane intercity motorway. approximately. It starts at a point on the existing Astromeritis-Evrychou road, south of the community of Astromeritis, after the junction to the Community of Vyzakia and ends at the junction of the existing road. The project includes an interchange (Koutrafa area) and overpasses with the relevant sections of roads required for the smooth operation of the motorway. At the beginning and the end, level junctions are provided for the connection to the existing road network. The project also includes a large viaduct on the river of Elia (area of Vyzakia).

Works included concern earthworks, stormwater drainage, construction, services, construction of a viaduct, road surfaces, road signs and signalling.

The existing Astromeritis-Evrychou road will remain in operation after the construction of the new motorway.

The implementation of the Project is scheduled to start immediately, with a duration of execution of 36 months and a cost of €88,627,630,00 including VAT.

Finally, he noted that "I would like to congratulate the Department of Public Works and state that, as their political head, I am very satisfied and particularly proud of their hard work, efficiency and productivity, since today they have either projects under execution or under offer costing more than €1.2 billion".
