After a long hearing, the curtain fell on an incredible case of bestiality, which had shocked and appalled public opinion when it saw the light of day in March 2018. The Larnaca District Court yesterday sentenced to nine months in prison a 65-year-old man from a village in the Nicosia district, who had sexually abused sheep and goats that were in a farmer's junkyard in Choirokoitia. A sentence that in essence throws the defendant on the soft side, since according to the criminal code, anyone who comes into "intercourse with an animal, is guilty of a felony and is subject to three years in prison.

The 65-year-old was found guilty of 57 counts of bestiality and violation of the Animal Protection and Welfare Act. According to the facts of the case, the defendant had caused on different dates in the first months of 2018 suffering, injury and fear to animals, through illegal entry into foreign property.

The case had been reported on February 3, 2018, by the owner of a small livestock unit in Choirokoitia, who had reported that for the last month, an unknown person was entering his junkyard and abusing the animals. The unit was placed under partial surveillance by members of the Kition Police Station, but the offences were still committed.

In order to ascertain what exactly was happening to his animals, the breeder was forced to install a cctv. To his great surprise, he found that a man was entering his junkyard and engaged in acts of bestiality. Some of the animals were examined by a Veterinary Officer and it was found that at least two of them had been sexually abused. This act continued until March 10, when the 65-year-old was located and arrested in the Nicosia district.

In his wilful testimony, he had then admitted that from January to March 2018, he was satisfying his sick appetites by sexually abusing animals at the livestock farm in Choirokoitia.
