Cyprus Government officials including the Police and Veterinary Services not only refuse to implement the animal welfare laws, but domestic and exotic animals are left completely to the mercy of uneducated civilians and zoo owners without expertise, who torture, abandon and kill animals. The Government passed animal welfare laws a few years back, but they are NOT willing to implement them or to penalize civilians for their damaging actions.
Tourists are horrified by the way Cyprus treats its animals (both domestic and wildlife) and they leave with the worst impressions. Tourists are justifiably boycotting the island and creating / signing petitions against Cyprus as a holiday destination.
Spaying/neutering programs are not funded, the selling and illegal breeding of pets has not been stopped in order to control the numbers of strays, the abandonment of domestic animals is out of control, the hunters who also abandon and / or shoot their dogs are out of control... NO! This is NOT a European and civilized country but a total disgrace. The images unfortunately speak for themselves.
Please end the Cypriot government's inefficiency and let's put pressure so they implement laws and programs that will end the killing, abandonment and suffering of domestic, exotic animals and wildlife in Cyprus !
