EPISODIC VEHICLE CHASE - SHOOTING AND INJURIES

 Filenews 12 September 2022

The Police proceeded with the arrest of three persons, in order to facilitate the investigations into an investigated case of illegal possession of property. The arrest of the three was episodic as it preceded a chase of the vehicle in which they were riding from Limassol to Larnaca. During the chase, warning shots were fired, while the three arrested and two police officers were injured.

Around 12.50a.m. today, information was received to the Police, according to which suspicious persons are stealing catalytic converters from cars, in an area of Limassol. Members of the Police went to the area where they spotted a car, which did not have registration plates. As soon as the driver of the car became aware of the presence of the police vehicle, he drove his car and collided with the police vehicle and then, developing speed, tried to escape. The police followed the suspicious vehicle, the driver of which, in his attempt to escape, committed a series of traffic violations.

The chase continued on the Limassol – Nicosia motorway and then on the Kofinou – Larnaca motorway. In the attempt of the police to stop the suspicious vehicle, a service pistol was used, with which a number of warning shots were fired.

The arrest of the vehicle finally became possible, in the area of the roundabout of Rizoelia. It was found that the driver of the vehicle was a 36-year-old man, while two other persons, aged 37 and 28, were also in the vehicle.

During a subsequent search of the car, an iron crowbar, two power cutting tools and two car catalysts were found. The three occupants of the vehicle did not give satisfactory explanations for the origin of the above objects, as a result of which they were arrested for the self-inflicted offense of illegal possession of property.

Due to the fact that the three arrested had been injured during the chase, they were taken to Larnaca General Hospital for treatment. Two of them, the 36-year-old and the 35-year-old, were detained for further hospitalization, while the 28-year-old, after receiving first aid, was discharged. Two police officers also went to the hospital for treatment, who were slightly injured during the chase.

The ICF Limassol is investigating the case.
