According to an announcement by the movement Ecologists - Citizens' Alliance, under the title "Lumberjacks negate foreign property", most of the time unconcerned people cut down trees for firewood, mainly carob trees and olives, and this has been increasing recently.
"The last complaint from Kyvides, in the Limassol District, where unconcerned people apparently cut six centuries-old carob trees for firewood. As Winter approaches and with the energy crisis in mind, the Local Authorities in cooperation with the Police will have to intensify the controls", it is added.
"Only yesterday the Minister of Agriculture referred to the benefits of the countryside from carob trees. Announcements are not enough. We need the state to stop this phenomenon, which is taking on alarming proportions."
