The upward trend recorded by tourist arrivals compared to last year is followed by tourist receipts, which in the first half of the year amounted to €835.7 million compared to only €258.8 million in the first half of 2021. The further increase in tourism revenues was contributed by receipts in June, which were twice as high as in the same month last year. Specifically, as announced yesterday by the Statistical Service, the revenues from tourism in June 2022 reached € 292.7 million compared to €135.8 million in June 2021, recording an increase of 115.5%.
Compared to 2019, which was the last regular year for tourism before the pandemic, although, at the same time, the best in the history of tourism, the decrease is limited to 16.5%, which is clearly less than the corresponding decrease recorded by arrivals in the same month compared to 2019 (-27%). Otherwise, arrivals in June amounted to 73% of those of 2019, while tourism revenues amounted to 83.5% of the same month in 2019. The smaller decrease recorded by the revenues from tourism in relation to arrivals compared to 2019 is assumed to be due to the increase in the expenditure of travellers but may also be affected by inflation and specifically by the increased prices recorded in general in services and goods.
As a result, however, of the new increase in revenue in June, the total receipts from tourism amounted, as mentioned, in the first half of this year to 835.7 million euros. compared to €258.8 million in the same period of 2021. Compared to the first half of 2019 when tourism revenues amounted to €1003.2 million. This year's revenues recorded a decrease of 16.7%.
