Despite their constant representations and frequent complaints, the situation that prevails in the port of Kato Paphos in terms of nuisance and the practical dangers caused by two-wheelers, as well as cars, continues without improvement, complain businessmen of the areas and patrons. The complaints erase a gloomy landscape, with the uncontrolled use of wheeled vehicles in the pedestrianized areas of the land part of the port, but also in the wider area of the promenade of Kato Paphos.
Businessmen in the area who spoke to "F" yesterday, confirmed the representations and complaints made recently to the Municipality of Paphos, the Ports Authority and the Police. They spoke of the excessive and uncontrolled, in their expression, use of motor scooters mainly, but also motorcycles, mopeds and cars, stressing that a particular problem is observed with the activity of rented two- or three-wheel vehicles that move in the midst of walkers, small children and patrons of cafes and restaurants.
"This excessive activity is a daily occurrence," they stressed, "with the result that the physical integrity of unsuspecting visitors is put at risk without exaggeration. An injury has already been recorded, fortunately slightly, of a small child from a passing moped from the pedestrian street of the land area."
The problem is now serious, mainly regarding the use of scooters on the sidewalks of the area, the professionals of the area complain. This is because these wheeled vehicles are rented and driven without prerequisites even by small children, while developing high speeds moving in the midst of unsuspecting walkers.
The problem is not limited only to the land area of the port, from where it started, they emphasize, since these vehicles now flood the sidewalks along the hotels to Geroskipou, but also to the Lighthouse.
"A barrier should be put in place, since the scale of the problem is now serious," they point out. "Competent bodies, such as the Police, the Ports Authority and the Municipal Authority, should be dealing with the issue before something serious happens that will discredit Paphos as a destination at a time when tourism has recovered to the benefit of all."
