The first three bus stops/canopies that were installed on Leof. Makarios III (commercial triangle) in Nicosia was inspected today by the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Yannis Karousos, in the presence of the Mayor of Nicosia, Konstantinos Yiorkadjis.
These stops/canopies are pilot-model samples of the bus stops/shelters that will be placed in the wider Cyprus in the framework of the Project concerning the upgrading of infrastructure, stops and bus shelters nationwide with a total value of €60 million (plus VAT), including the fifteen-year maintenance and extensions, for which the Tender is in progress.
The unified design of the stops / shelters was prepared by the Company Demades Design Ltd, Industrial Designer, with which the Department of Public Works contracted after conducting an open tender and takes into account the conditions and data of Cyprus and achieves uniformity, scalability for adaptation to the available space and use needs, accessibility for use by people with disabilities, safety and protection from weather conditions, lighting, use of renewable energy sources and technology.
The purpose of the model samples, which were constructed by the industrial designer of the Project, is to confirm the correctness of the design and requirements of the object of the major project, as well as the correctness of materials and the method of construction.
The installation of the first stops / shelters of the Project on a pancyprian scale, is expected to start in early 2023 and includes the installation of
- 350 pillars with built-in technology,
- 2,000 simple pillars,
- 1,350 small shelters,
- 650 large canopies for urban areas,
- 100 large shelters suitable for mountainous areas,
- repair and repositioning of more than 600 existing shelters,
- photovoltaic systems and connection to a fixed electricity supply network, and
- 200 bike stands and bike lanes in central locations to encourage the use of bicycles and multimodal transportation by sustainable means.
The tender of this Project is conducted in two stages and so far the evaluation of the first stage has been completed. 11 Economic Operators have expressed interest in this tender, from which those who meet the participation criteria will be invited to submit a full Technical and Financial Offer, as well as a sample of a shelter as a demonstration of their technical ability.
The Project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund THALIA by 65% and by national resources by 35% and is part of the framework of upgrading the infrastructure of public passenger transport, with the ultimate goal of providing an improved and increased service to public transport users.
The Project falls within the objectives of the strategic plans of the Republic of Cyprus, including the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, the Municipalities and Communities and is an integral part of the specialized plans made for the transition to sustainable mobility and green development.
Type C canopy:

Type B canopy:
(It will be installed when there is not enough space to place a type C canopy or there is a restriction due to shops / houses or other developments).
