MANY ARRESTS IN AYIA NAPA AND PROTARAS FOR DRUGS AND ILLEGAL EMPLOYMENT

In the context of the daily action plans prepared by the Famagusta Police Department in the tourist areas of Protaras and Ayia Napa in order to more effectively prevent and combat crime and consolidate the sense of security and protection of citizens, coordinated operations were carried out with the participation of members of the police stations of Ayia Napa and Paralimni, as well as members of the OPE, TAE, Famagusta Traffic Police, Famagusta Y.K.N., Famagusta M.D.A&D., Traffic Police Headquarters as well as members of the M.M.A.D.

During the operations, checks were carried out on 115 premises and 166 persons were checked, while 41 complaints emerged concerning:

  • 3 for the operation of a premises without permission from the Deputy Ministry of Tourism
  • 11 for the operation of a premises in violation of closing hours
  • 7 for the operation of a premises without a license to sell alcoholic beverages
  • 6 for the operation of a premises and the sale of alcoholic beverages in breach of the terms of the licence
  • 12 for the operation of a premises without an authorisation to emit sound from the competent authority
  • 1 for nuisance in violation of quiet hours (0030-0600)
  • 1 for illegal itinerant selling

There were also 141 traffic complaints and 60 breathalyzer tests were carried out, which revealed 13 complaints about driving under the influence of alcohol.

In the context of police checks to combat illegal employment and employment as well as illegal stay, the members of the Police proceeded to a total of 6 arrests of third-country nationals who were found to be working without the relevant permit, one of whom was found to be residing illegally in the Republic. The employers of the above were charged in writing to be summoned before a Court.

Another 28-year-old third-country national was arrested and was spotted on 15/8/22 at 0040 wandering on Agias Mavris Street in Ayia Napa suspiciously. After being stopped by members of the police, it was found that he was staying illegally in the Republic and was informed that he would be arrested. Immediately the 28-year-old pushed the policeman to avoid arrest and fled and as a result he was chased and intercepted nearby. He was then taken to the Ayia Napa police station and taken into custody. A case against him is expected to be registered within the day in the Famagusta district court in Paralimni.

Also, 6 arrests were made for cases of illegal possession of drugs.

Specifically, on 12/8/22 at 2210 in Ayia Napa, a 23-year-old man was arrested from the United Kingdom in whose possession a bag of cocaine of 0.3 grams was found. He was taken to the offices of Famagusta YKAN and after being accused in writing he was released to be summoned later.

On 13/8/22 at 0010 a 23-year-old man from Switzerland was arrested in whose possession a bag of cocaine of 0.3 grams was found. He was taken to the offices of Famagusta YKAN and after being accused in writing he was released to be summoned later.

On 14/8/22 at 0130 in Ayia Napa, two Greek Cypriots aged 19 and 20 years were arrested in whose possession they found a handmade cigarette containing cannabis plant matter mixed with manufactured tobacco 9 cm long and a nylon bag containing vegetable matter- cannabis weighing 0.3670 grams. Both were taken to the offices of  Famagusta YKAN and after being accused in writing they were released to be summoned later.

On 14/8/22 at 0230 in Ayia Napa, a 26-year-old third-country national was arrested in whose possession a quantity of plant matter - cannabis weighing 0.3685 grams was found. He was taken to the offices of  Famagusta YKAN and after being accused in writing he was released to be summoned later.

On 15/8/22 at 0120 in Ayia Napa, a 28-year-old woman was arrested from Russia in whose possession a handmade cigarette containing cannabis was found. She was taken to the offices of Famagusta YKAN and after being accused in writing she was released to be summoned later.

Also on 13/8/22 at 2250 and on 15/8/22 at 0445 in Protaras and Ayia Napa, two arrests of British tourists aged 23 and 31 respectively were made for offences of drunkenness, restlessness, disturbing the peace, public insult, attacking police officers and resisting legal arrest. In both cases, those arrested were charged in writing and released, while it is expected that within the day the cases will be registered before the Famagusta District Court in Paralimni. The cases were investigated by the police stations of Ayia Napa and Paralimni.

The coordinated operations of the Famagusta Police Department will continue throughout the tourist season.
