INFLATION CONTINUES TO AFFECT PRICES OF BASIC GOODS

With undiminished intensity, price increases continue on a number of basic goods supplied to consumers from supermarkets. Increases related to imports of raw materials affected by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but also to other products that businesses, importers and manufacturers, were affected by energy. From the beginning of the year until yesterday, there are significant increases based on the data of the Consumer Protection Service, which were in force on 10 and 11/8/2022 compared to 12/1/2022.

The first signs began to emerge in the prices of milk and dairy products, after the increase in fresh milk, which is a basic necessity due to the agreement on halloumi. In milk the increase in price reached 10%. In cheeses the increases range from 15% to 24%. In the last week, there was also an increase in the price of halloumi, with companies already selling more expensive by 10%. Feta is sold more expensive by 15%, while the packaging of sliced cheeses increased by 20%. The price of strained yogurt also increased by 36%. It is noted that in September new price increases in dairy products are expected.

It is noted that the prices of cold cuts also increased by 10%, with the price of turkey and ham showing particular appreciations. Increases are also observed in rice and legumes. Rice increased from 12%-15%, lentils from 24%-45%, beans 15%-38% and pilaf 14%-17%.

The price of Cypriot coffee has increased by 10% since the beginning of the year, while the prices of imported coffees show the same increase. The flour, sugar and egg category also shows significant price increases. Flour increased from 15%- 34% depending on packaging and use. The price of sugar, as well as eggs, is up 35%, as well as 17% eggs. The price of cereals increased 11%.

The average prices of various cans also increased from 10% to 16%. A specific package of Cypriot water shows an increase of 10%, with the waters of the other two Cypriot companies that present the price levels at the Observatory of the Consumer Protection Service showing no change. The same upward trend is shown by frozen products, which many households seem to prefer. Various fish grew from 11%-25%. A 17% increase in the price of chicken nuggets and burgers from beef and pork.

And in fresh fish there are price increases. The price of sea bass increases by 20%, the large squid 12% and the octopus 13%. The various types of pasta show increases from 10% to 16%, while the prices of vegetables also show increases. Bunch greens increased 15%, fresh potatoes 24%, the price of tomato doubled, while in greenhouse gherkins there is an increase of 36%.

Increases are recorded by comparing August prices with last January in the prices of bread by 23% and slays 10%. Large fluctuations with an increasing trend are presented by the prices of various oils where increases of 48%-87% are recorded in sunflower oil and extra virgin olive oil of 15%.

It is noted that this observatory is carried out on a monthly basis and includes stable products and price collection areas. It is emphasized that price observatories are not intended and cannot replace the market research that each consumer must do based on his own preferences, data and needs, nor do they aim to indicate to consumers the points of sale they will choose.
