BREAKTHROUGH IN BLOCK 6 BY EMI-TOTAL

 Filenewws 22 August 2022

A significant discovery of a natural gas field in block 6 of the Cypriot EEZ was announced by the consortium of ENI-TOTAL (they jointly have a percentage of 50%).

According to an official announcement by ENI, preliminary estimates at the Cronos-1 deposit of block 6 indicate the existence of 2.5 tcf of natural gas.

Cronos-1 showed fairly good intervals of good quality carbonate salts and confirmed the total net gas fee, over 260 meters, TotalEnergies reports.

"This successful research at Cronos-1 is yet another illustration of the impact of our exploration strategy that focuses on discovering resources with low technical costs and low carbon emissions, to contribute to energy security, including the provision of additional sources of gas supply to Europe," said Kevin McLachlan, vice president of TotalEnergies.

The Cronos-1 deposit is the fourth objective attempted by the EMI and the second in block 6. The company manages blocks 2, 3, 6, 8, and 9 and has holdings in blocks 7 and 11 managed by Total.

At the "Zeus-1" target, for a new exploratory drilling in Block 6 in order to more accurately estimate the quantities of natural gas in this block, the drilling ship "Tungsten Explorer" has now gone.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the consortium of Enni Cyprus Limited and TotalEnergies EP Cyprus B.V. and the Ministry are already working on ways to accelerate and optimally exploit the new discovery in the EEZ of Cyprus, among other things by contributing to Europe's efforts to enhance its energy security and in this context the new exploratory drilling will be carried out.

Features of good up to excellent quality

Following the announcements of Eni Cyprus Limited and TotalEnergies EP Cyprus B.V., the Ministry of Energy announced on its part that the works of the exploratory drilling "Cronos-1", within Block 6 of the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus, have been successfully and safely completed.

The drilling, which was carried out by the ship-drilling rig "Tungsten Explorer" at a water depth of 2,287 meters, showed the existence of a column of clean natural gas of 260 metres, as he notes.

"On the basis of the extensive analysis of the data obtained, the reservoir that was discovered has characteristics of good to excellent quality and has, according to preliminary estimates, a total amount of natural gas of 2.5 trillion cubic feet (Tcf)," he adds.
