ARRESTS IN AYIA NAPA/FAMAGUSTA

Handcuffs to six third-country nationals were passed by the authorities in Ayia Napa on the grounds that they were bums and fallacies.

According to the Police, the six foreigners were spotted in the courtyard of the church of Ayia Napa lying under benches, were homeless, begging and living without proper means of maintenance.

From the examinations carried out, it was found that five of them are applicants for political asylum, while the latter was found to be illegally on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus after his application for political asylum was rejected.

All those arrested were taken to the Ayia Napa Police Station and taken into custody. Within the day they are expected to appear before the Famagusta District Court.

Other arrests

In the context of the checks carried out by the Police to combat illegal employment and employment as well as illegal stay in the territories of the Republic, the members of the Famagusta Police, identified a 19-year-old foreigner working without possessing an employment contract stamped by the Department of Labour. The 19-year-old was arrested for the offence of illegal employment and then taken to the Ayia Napa Police Station, where after being interrogated he was charged in writing with the offence of illegal employment and released. As his employer, 19 years old indicated a Greek Cypriot who after being called to the Ayia Napa Police Station was charged in writing with the offense of illegal employment of 19 years.

At dawn on the same day, members of Famagusta OPE, after evaluating information, stopped for research two British tourists aged 38 and 39. During the investigation in the possession of the 38-year-old, cannabis plant material weighing 3.0784 grams and a plastic grinder with traces of cannabis were found. The 38-year-old was arrested for the offence of unlawful possession of a class B controlled drug and possession of utensils specially made for the use of a class B controlled drug.

The 39-year-old at the sight of the arrest of the 38-year-old began shouting and obstructing the members of the police in the performance of their duty, resulting in him being arrested for the offences of disturbing and obstructing an instrument in the performance of his duty. In a subsequent search of their rooms, a pack of cigarettes containing a quantity of cocaine weighing 0.1 grams was found in the 38-year-old's room.

Those arrested were taken to the Ayia Napa police station where they were charged in writing and released to be summoned later before the Famagusta District Court.
