Despite their constant representations and frequent complaints, the situation that prevails lately on the pedestrian street in the port of Kato Paphos regarding its use by two-wheelers, as well as cars, continues without improvement, denounce businessmen of the areas and patrons.
Businessmen and visitors of the area confirmed the representations and complaints made recently to the Municipality of Paphos, the Ports Authority and the Police. They spoke of the excessive and uncontrolled, in their expression, use of motorcycles, mopeds, and even cars, stressing that a particular problem is observed with the activity of rented two- or three-wheel motor vehicles moving in the midst of hikers, small children and patrons of cafes and restaurants.
"It is a frequent phenomenon, especially on weekends when there is increased traffic, this excessive activity," they stressed, "as a result of which the physical integrity of unsuspecting visitors is endangered without exaggeration. An injury has already been recorded, fortunately slightly, of a small child from a passing moped from the pedestrian street of the land area, but also an accident with an employee of a company supplying recreation centrs who was hit by an electric bicycle while making a delivery to a centre of the area".
The professionals of the area observe that the continuation of the phenomenon is now unjustified, since for a few days now the new large parking space has been given for use by the Archaeological Park of the pier.
The re-use of the large parking lot came at the right time, emphasize businessmen of the area, since the massive start of the tourist season has "flooded" Paphos in visitors during this period. As a result of the lack of adequate parking spaces until recently, there were hundreds of metres of queues of cars on a daily basis, tourist buses that were forced to disembark their passengers in the middle of the road, a delay in leaving the coastal front, reminiscent of big cities with a serious traffic problem and therefore intense irritation everywhere.
This situation changed, however, from the festive three days of the Flood, since the new landscaped parking space was given for use to visitors and professionals of the area, even if the works within it are not fully completed. This fact, professionals observe, renders unjustified any illegal trafficking of wheeled vehicles on sidewalks or other places that are not suitable for movement of vehicles.
