GLAMPING - BILL REJECTED DUE TO CONCERNS

Filenews 1 July 2022 - by Adamos Adamou

Serious reservations regarding the impact on the environment but much more concerns of MPs about interventions in the area of Akamas and Troodos.  Yesterday, a vote was not allowed by the Plenary of the Parliament of the bill that provides for the establishment of a legislative framework that will allow the development of Glamping, that is, luxury camps and the introduction of a framework for all camps, that does not exist today.

Specifically, articles of the bill were rejected by 19 votes in favour, 19 against and two abstentions, out of the 40 present at the time of the vote, with the result being different, as at the time of the vote there were absences, as in almost the entire duration of yesterday's Plenary session of the House. From the interventions of AKEL MPs and Ecologists, mainly, who voted against the articles - but also by Christos Orphanides of DIKO - it appeared that the effort of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism to regulate campsites and Glamping to enrich the tourist product are met with serious concerns about impacts on the environment.

Indicative was the report of AKEL MP Kostas Kostas Kostas about posts on the internet in recent weeks that Glamping is coming, with which private plots were advertised in Akamas, in Natura 2000 areas. The president of ecologists, Charalambos Theopemptou, was also intense yesterday for the whole effort, calling any construction in non-urban areas an "invasion" of nature
