FORGET ABOUT VEHICLES IN THE CENTRE OF NICOSIA

 Filenews 6 July 2022

"The goal is no vehicles in the center of Nicosia," the Minister of Transport, Yiannis Karousos, confirmed speaking to ACTIVE, stressing that the changes that come with the one-way streets and bus lanes will not be to the benefit of those who use their private vehicle to move around Nicosia. "The benefit of those who choose public transport will be many times greater," he said.

"If we want buses and we want to enhance their use and if we want to be environmentally friendly, a network should be created that provides unhindered movement of buses, without there being an obstacle from another vehicle in these lanes. Today it takes longer to get around by bus than by car. This will be reversed", clarified the Minister of Transport.

The study, which is expected in October, will include an integrated network of bus lanes and one-way streets, the Minister explained, saying that we will be forced to change the mentality of Cypriots. Nicosia, he stressed, will be the first city to change and the use of the private car will be a complete inconvenience. This, he added, provides for a complete improvement of the network and bus stops, while even traffic lights will give priority to buses.

Yiannis Karousos did not rule out the change in the opening hours of schools, but also of the public service, which, as he said, will solve the traffic issue.
