FORECLOSURES ON HOLD UNTIL THE END OF OCTOBER

Filenews 12 July 2022 - by Eleftheria Paizanou

A new short-term freeze on foreclosures by the Parliament is being promoted. Yesterday, in a closed-door session of the Parliamentary Committee on Finance, it was decided to put mortgage foreclosures on ice until the end of October, rather than bring back to the table the 13 bills that change the legal framework for auctions.

This is the proposal for a law of EDEK, DHPA and Ecologists, which initially proposed a suspension of foreclosures until the end of the year, but then it was decided that the freeze would apply until October 31, 2022. The legislation will concern a main residence worth up to €350,000, a business premises with an annual turnover of €750,000 and parcels of land worth €100,000.

In fact, this is the same perimeter that was in force in last year's legislative regulation of the Parliament, which suspended the application of the law from the end of August until the end of October. In fact, a few weeks ago, the Supreme Court had ruled that that regulation was not unconstitutional, as the duration of the suspension of the legislation was for a few months. After all, that is why the rapporteurs have changed the period of time during which the legislation will not apply.

The bill will be approved, as it seems to have the required majority. Also, due to the Court's decision, the Government will have no arguments on which to rely in order to proceed with the referral of the law. Today, at 8 a.m., the Finance Committee is scheduled to hold an extraordinary meeting to examine the bill, so that on Thursday it can be taken to the Plenary of the House.

According to information from "F", until late last night there were behind-the-scenes consultations between the Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank and the Association of Banks, to voluntarily proceed with the freezing of foreclosures. If the banks decide to do so, there will be no regulation.
