Sharp increases in agricultural commodities continue in Cyprus, where prices are much higher than the averages for the same products in the other EU Member States. Even in cases where the average price in the EU reduced last month compared to the previous one, for some products in Cyprus they showed an increase.
Indicatively, it is reported that the price of barley decreased in the EU by 4.8% in June compared to May, while in Cyprus the price has increased by 5.3%. The same is observed with the price of maize where it fell by 0.5% in the EU and in Cyprus it increased by 2.8%. Within the past month, the price of pork fell by 4.7% and chicken by 0.1%.
The fluctuation within a year in the price of barley remains huge, where in Cyprus it shows an increase of 71%, which moves around the average price in the EU where it increased by 68.7%. The price of pork in the period June 2021-June 2022 increased by 19.1% compared to a 15.3% average increase in the EU. On the contrary, the price of chicken remains increased in Cyprus by 3.2%, a percentage change much lower than in the EU where it increased by 26.5%.
As far as food prices are concerned, they have risen sharply across the EU in a year, as a consequence of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
