CLIMATE CHANGE - FOR THE FIRST TIME THE HEAT OF 'HUMIDITY' IS BEING INVESTIGATED

 Filenews 27 July 2022

"The weather tricks are not accidental," Dr. Panos Chatzinikolaou, a researcher at the Center of Excellence for climate and atmosphere at the Cyprus Institute, told ACTIVE and the ANTENNA show, referring to the rise in temperature globally and in a short time to have rains and storms, as a result of climate change.

Our region, he said, North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean are at the centre of the changes, they are the "Hot Spot", of climate change in various parameters.

Asked about the maps, which often densely show the coastline of Cyprus in specific ones being wiped out with the immuneness of the sea level, Mr. Chatzinikolaou said that, "In Cyprus in recent years, while we did not do badly in rainfall, in 2008 we had a very long drought, when we imported water from Greece. Temperature-wise we follow the global trend and we know that our region is warming up faster than the global average."

The researcher also referred to the unprecedented phenomenon that Nicosia experienced in 2020, when temperatures beyond 40 degrees Celsius were recorded for 48 consecutive days.

And now he noted, scientists are proceeding to measure, not only the dry air, but also the temperature of the liquid thermometer. The combination of high temperature and high humidity, is painful for human health.

"We predict even for Cyprus in a world where global warming will be three degrees Celsius more, the coast of the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus are likely to experience humidity beyond 30 degrees, which reaches the limits of danger, as the limit of human survival is 35 degrees Celsius," the researcher explained, referring to the bad scenarios of the immediate future.
