'CENTAUR' THE NEW VARIANT OF OMICRON, DETECTED IN 8 COUNTRIES

 Filenews 13 July 2022

Virologists and scientists are concerned about the emergence of a highly contagious variant of the Omicron mutation, which is spreading rapidly in India and has reached as far as the United Kingdom.

This is the sub-variant of the coronavirus with the scientific name BA.2.75 named "Centaurus" (centaurus).

Most people who get sick will experience symptoms that resemble a cold and flu.

Cases of BA.2.75 have currently been detected in the USAAustralia, CanadaGermanyJapan, New Zealand and Great Britain.

Dr Gagandeep Kang, who studies viruses at Christian Medical College India in Vellore, said that "we have to accept that we are now living with a higher level of risk than in the past."

But it will take weeks to figure out whether or not the strain will affect the spread of the virus, the scientists point out.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has begun monitoring the variant to see how it evolves.
