'CAP' ON THE DAILY NUMBER OF TRAVELLERS AT HEATHROW AIRPORT

 Filenews 12 July 2022

The management of Heathrow, Britain's and Europe's largest airport, has asked airlines to stop selling tickets for the summer, as it imposes a limit on the number of passengers it will serve daily.

The limit is set at 100,000 passengers and will apply from today until September 11. This is a 4,000 reduction in the average daily number of passengers that the airport was estimated to have to serve for the rest of the summer.

The decision is due to the ongoing shortages of ground staff, which have led to thousands of flight cancellations and great inconvenience for the travelling public in the last month and a half.

Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kay said that in recent weeks passengers have often exceeded 100,000 a day, resulting in "periods when service drops to a level that is not acceptable."

He added that of the 4,000 daily seats that are being cut, about 1,500 tickets have been sold. That is why airlines are urged to stop selling tickets for flights from the airport in order to avoid greater inconvenience for the travelling public.

"We recognize that this means that some summer trips will either be transferred to another day or to another airport or cancelled and we apologize to those whose plans are affected," Mr Holland-Kay added.
