ARREST OF 24 YEAR OLD RE SHAM MARRIAGE, FORGERY AND OTHER OFFENCES

The Police, after cooperating with the German authorities, proceeded yesterday to the arrest of a 24-year-old man, in connection with an investigated case of trafficking in persons, the commission of a fictitious marriage, forgery, and the securing of registration with false representations, offenses committed in Cyprus, in 2019.

The 24-year-old was wanted by the authorities of the Republic, who issued a European arrest warrant against him, following evidence that emerged during the investigation of the case. He was recently located in Germany and arrested with the European warrant, while after a court procedure, the German authorities approved the request for his extradition to Cyprus.

Members of the Anti-Trafficking Office travelled to Germany and yesterday they escorted the suspect by plane to Larnaka airport, where upon their arrival they proceeded to arrest him with a Court Warrant.

This morning, the 24-year-old is expected to be brought before a Court, with the Police filing a request for a detention order for the purpose of investigating the case.

The coordination of cooperation and communication with the German authorities was carried out by the Interpol Office of Nicosia, of the Directorate of European Union – International Police Cooperation – WEU-DAS, of the Police Headquarters.

In the same case, another person, a 34-year-old man, who has been prosecuted, had been arrested by the members of the Anti-Trafficking Office, with the case under trial.

The Office of Combating Trafficking in Persons continues the examinations.
