IRAN HAS FILED AN APPLICATION TO BECOME A MEMBER OF BRICS

 Filenews 28 June 2022

Iran has filed an application to join the group of the largest emerging economies, known as BRICS, an Iranian official said yesterday, Monday.

Iran's inclusion in the BRICS group (from the initials of the countries Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), "will result in the creation of added value for both sides," according to the spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said separately that Argentina has filed an application to join the same group of countries.

Argentine officials did not comment directly.

Argentine President Alberto Fernández, who is in Europe, has in recent days referred to his desire for his country to join the BRICS team.

"While the White House was thinking about what else to destroy in the world, Argentina and Iran filed applications to join the BRICS," Zakharova wrote on the messaging app Telegram.

Russia has long sought to strengthen its relations with Asia, South America and the Middle East, but has recently intensified its efforts to address sanctions imposed on it by Europe, the US and other countries following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
