 Filenews 21 June 2022

Important facilities on the motorways, such as public toilets, recharging stations, cafes and kiosks, were approved at a meeting on Tuesday by the Council of Ministers, in the context of development policy.

In a written statement, the Deputy Government Spokesperson Niovi Parisinou, notes that the creation of Public Toilets, Recharging Stations and Other Facilities in the Motorway Network is expected to have multiple advantages, the main one being the satisfaction of the real needs of service to users and vehicles moving in the special road environment of the motorways, increasing the general level of functionality of the public road network and contributing to individual policies of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, such as road safety, the development of electrification of road transport, the support of public transport and in general the objectives of sustainable development.

In addition, he points out that these infrastructures are expected to support other policies of the State in the field of tourism, economic development and the creation of permanent jobs.

The main objective, he said, is to save resources and create synergies by exploiting existing and proposed public spaces and infrastructure, such as Bus Stations and Weighing Stations. The Public Toilets, Recharging Stations and Other Facilities that will be selected, should provide services on a 24-hour basis.

"In these areas there will be facilities for toilets (men, women, people with disabilities), as well as facilities of a small café / kiosk, as well as charging points for electric vehicles. The services of the toilets will be offered free of charge. Any other services that are decided to be offered (e.g. cafeteria) will not be provided free of charge, with the aim of the revenues covering part of the operating expenses and/or the initial investment," he concluded.
