WOODEN SOUNDS - Quintets Chamber music concert series
Attikon Theatre, Paphos
5 June - 7pm
Chamber Music Concert for Marimba and String Quartet
The concert WOODEN SOUNDS focuses on the wooden sounds of the violin, the viola, the cello and the marimbas, highlighting the marmiba as a solo instrument through landmark pieces. Its name is inspired by the latest work of the composer Andy Akiho's LIgNeouS program, which describes something that is made of wood or looks like wood. To emphasize this element, the composer uses only the wooden part of even the millets that the soloist holds throughout the work. Specifically, five works of contemporary repertoire will be presented, which offer different styles and dialogues between the marimbas and the string quartet. From the intense polyrhythmic character of Dave Maric, to the sounds and techniques of the songs of the Eskimos of Alaska, Northern Canada and Greenland from which Christos Hatzis was influenced. The work Fertility Rites by Greek composer Christos Hatzis, for solo marimba and digital sound, is inspired by the singing technique Inuit Throat. This is an almost haunted, one might say, and extremely expressive work. It is considered innovative in the way it combines live percussion music with digital sound, which consists of pre-recorded marimbas sounds and inuit singing technique. |
