WILD INCIDENTS IN THE ACCOMMODATION OF UNACCOMPANIED MINORS IN PAPHOS

More and more important problems seem to be created on a continuous basis in the region where the closed accommodation facility for unaccompanied young people from foreign countries has been operating in recent months. Residents report antisocial behaviours and nuisance daily, while on Friday night the most serious incidents from the day of the transfer of the 150 unaccompanied foreigners to Paphos were recorded.

For a minor reason, according to police examinations, dozens of young people who live in the area where they have settled, in the central area near the Tombs of the Kings, were intertwined for hours with each other, causing concern in the wider area with chases, wood and the use of objects against each other.

Fearful residents informed the Police, whose powerful forces, reinforced by members of the MMAD, rushed to the spot to impose order. From the incidents, two young people were injured and had to be transferred to Paphos Hospital where they were treated, while late in the evening the situation in the facility normalized.

A police force remained in the area to prevent a resurgence of incidents, but local residents and shopkeepers now appear very angry about the social status that is being consolidated in the area. Especially the entrepreneurs of the hundreds of tourism businesses in the region are complaining about the impact caused to the image of this tourist area of the city at a time, they point out, when tourist traffic has recovered for good after the restrictions of the pandemic.
