THE HISTORY OF THE CYPRIOT PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY - NEW MUSEUM IN LIMASSOL

An ornament museum dedicated to the history of industrial pharmacy in Cyprus has been adorning the city of Limassol for the past week, offering a unique experience to visitors to get to know the history of the pharmaceutical industry through the passage of time. The museum "Takis Pattichis" stands out, as it is the first of its kind to host a fine collection of scientific exhibits related to the pharmaceutical industry.

Through the initiative of the foundation "Charalambos & Elena Pattichi", the inauguration of the Museum of Industrial Pharmacy "Takis Pattichis" by the President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, took place last Friday, April 29, 2022. The beautiful event that took place in the Carob Mill of Lanitis was attended by distinguished guests, ministers, state and government officials, MPs, local rulers as well as friends and associates of the foundation "Charalambos & Elena Pattichi", as well as various city bodies.

 In a greeting addressed by the President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, he praised the initiative of the foundation "Charalambos & Elena Pattichi", stressing the importance and importance of the exhibits hosted in the museum. "Every visitor becomes a partaker of the history of the pharmaceutical industry in our country", noted Mr. Anastasiades, adding that it is a story, but also a development that is directly linked to the strong personality and valuable contribution of the late Takis Pattichis. He also noted that the creation of the museum complements the museum map of Cyprus and is the new page of the foundation's contribution to our country.

The President of the Republic congratulated Charalambos and Elena Pattichi for their initiative to give "flesh and bones" to the collection of the Pattichis family, which includes a large number of rare and of special interest relics, making the best use of the legacy of Takis Pattichis.

"I am absolutely certain that the museum will be an important space for the zealots of the object, but also for the general public, opening up a plethora of prospects for the study and exploitation of the collection of objects that it gathers and will be an important point of reference for the city and our Cyprus in general", he pointed out.

The President of the Republic referred to the achievements and contribution of Takis Pattichis in Cyprus and abroad. He made particular reference to the contribution of the pharmaceutical industry Remedica, which was founded by Takis Pattichis and which contributed to the economic development of Cyprus. "The deep humanitarian principles, values and ideals that distinguished Takis Pattichis, which led him as an active citizen to turn his recognition into an uninterrupted contribution to society and the homeland. It is for this very reason that his name was identified with generosity and philanthropy, while over the years the evolutionary course of the company is fully identified with the intense social work and the action that followed", underlined Mr. Anastasiades.

The President of the Republic also praised the route of the offer followed and continued by his son Charalambos and his wife, Elena Pattichi. As he pointed out, the foundation "Charalambos & Elena Pattichi", set as a guide of its mission high acts of charity, projects and initiatives of multifaceted and profuse contribution, oriented towards philanthropy, the preservation of cultural heritage and the promotion of culture and education in our country, but also abroad.

In his address during the presentation of the book on the life and work of Takis Pattichis, his son Charalambos noted that the Museum of Industrial Pharmacy was a strong wish of his late father. "He expressed it strongly especially in his last ones. I feel proud that it has finally become a reality", he said.

How pills, syrups and pharmaceutical creams were prepared

The museum was founded in 2022 by the foundation "Charalambos & Elena Pattichi" and took its name from Takis Pattichis (1927 – 2016), founder of the Cypriot pharmaceutical industry and Remedica company. Takis Pattichis is often referred to as the "father" of the pharmaceutical industry of Cyprus. Starting in the 1960s, his vision was to establish the production and export of pharmaceutical products based in Cyprus. This has been achieved by highlighting Cyprus as a country of origin for high-tech products.

The "Takis Pattichis" Museum hosts an exquisite collection of scientific exhibits related to the manufacture of pharmaceutical products in Cyprus starting in the 1960s. These exhibits are classified into 5 categories:

>> Production Machinery.

>> Chemical Laboratory Institutions.

>> Interim checks.

>> Weighing instruments.

>> Books and manuals.

Visitors to the "Takis Pattichis" museum have the opportunity to live a unique experience with a journey through the passage of time and the history of industrial pharmacy in Cyprus. Through the fine collection of scientific exhibits they will see up close the machines that were used for the manufacture of pharmaceutical products such as capsules, tablets, syrups and creams, which were manufactured in Cyprus.

It is worth mentioning that the exhibits have been enriched with state-of-the-art equipment with audiovisual media, including a touch screen, through which visitors have the opportunity to explore various topics related to the museum and industrial pharmacy.

The museum is located in the centre of the old town of Limassol, in the historic Lanitis Carob Mill building. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 09:30 to 18:00 and admission is free.
