SUSPICIOUS PASSWORD-STEALING MESSAGES ON SOCIAL MEDIA

 Filenews 8 May 2022

In recent days, the Electronic Crime Subdivision, Cyprus Police has received several complaints about suspicious password interception messages on Social Media and especially on Instagram.

Specifically, various users receive a message from a known person on Instagram, who urges them to invest in various cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, etc.). These messages are malicious and have as their purpose the financial benefit as well as to gain access to the account of the recipient himself.

With this method, cunning people gain access to various user accounts, which they then use to fool other unsuspecting users.

Recommendations:

  • The public is urged to be particularly careful in such messages and not to disclose codes received to any person.
  • It is recommended to enable the two-factor security settings for their electronic accounts.
  • In case of receiving a suspicious message / request, communicate in a different way with the person from whom he received the message to confirm the request.
  • In case he/she has taken any actions indicated to him/her, it is recommended to immediately check and change the password of the account.
