SNAKE BITES - IMPORTANT ADVICE IN CYPRUS

 Filenews 30 May 2022

Out of danger is the eleven-year-old who is hospitalized at the Makarios Hospital after a snake bite, the Director of the hospital Christos Minas told THE ATZENTA show on ΑKTTIVE. We are watching he said, "clinically and laboratory, as we still need 48 hours to overcome the risk of various complications occurring."

In Cyprus, the viper, is well-known, Mr Minas said, explaining that protection and prevention measures are very important.

"Despite the immediate reaction and first aid there is mortality from the toxin of the viper bite," the doctor said, recommending everyone not to move with feet uncovered and especially in places where there is dense and high vegetation.

"Beyond that, if an accident occurs and someone is bitten by a poisonous viper, we don't do what we did in the past. That is, we do not tear the wound, we do not suck the poison with the mouth or other devices, we do not put drugs, nor ice on the wound. What we do is to move away safely, because there is a risk of a second bite and we immobilize that part of the body that received the bite, usually the leg, so that the poison is not transmitted, we wash it with soap and water and we rush to Accident & Emergency as a matter of urgency", the doctor suggested.

Of utmost importance, he said, is immobilization after a bite and very good washing with soap.
