In an original and creative way, Pafos organizes again this year the celebration of Spring and flowers, the "Anthesteria" 2022. The event, which is co-organized by the Municipality of Pafos and the Naturalist Cultural Club of Pafos, as followers of a long tradition of more than 85 years, will take place on Sunday, May 8, at the 28th October Square.
The program of this year's event will begin at the Town Hall Square, at 5.30p.m., with the Music Ensembles of the Music School of Pafos. At 6.00p.m. There will be a revival of the ancient Greek Myth of "Narcissus and echoes", directed by Paola Hadjilambri, with the participation of professional actors Paolas Chatzilampris, Stefanis Mavrokordatos, Kikis Kakoulli and Elena Cheleti.
According to legend, starting from Mount Olympus, the goddess Hera orders Echo and the other nymphs to follow Zeus to Earth to confirm his infidelities. Echo meets on her journey and falls in love with the beautiful Narcissus, whom she follows to the forest. When she returns to Mount Olympus, Hera, angry, curses her to lose her voice and repeat only the last words of what she hears. Returning to Earth again, Echo repeats what Narcissus tells her, causing him to flee away from her. The desperate echo is lost in the forest, while Narcissus ignores all the Nymphs and goddesses, which infuriates Hera who curses him to be greatly hurt by love.
Then Narcissus, when he anchors in a lake and sees his idol, falls in love with himself and is stranded there for many days, asking his idol to talk to him. When in the end he dies of disappointment and sadness the gods grow a narcissus to honour him.
